Chapter 8

After doing my indoor chores, I headed outside, if for nothing more than to get away from the irritating sound of Johnny’s trumpet. I swore those music lessons were doing nothing to help him because his trumpet playing kept sounding worse and worse.

It was already late, and the sun would be setting soon. If I didn’t at least get some leaves raked, my mother was going to keep me grounded forever.

I sighed and headed over to the back of our yard. I poked my head inside the shed and grabbed the rake. I got the feeling I was being watched, and the hair on the back of my neck stood up straight. I spun around and screamed when I saw Candy standing in the graveyard staring at me with dark, sunken eyes. She leaned against the tomb of Thomas Muffet.

“Candy, you scared me,” I said, trying not to look at her as I raked the leaves. A part of me was angry with her – with Patience, for being the crux of all my problems right now. Still, she was my friend, and in need of help, so I couldn’t ignore her.

“I had to get out of the house,” said Candy, sounding like herself.

I slowed down the raking and glanced at her from the corners of my eyes. “Why?”

“My mother isn’t home. I’m afraid of being alone with my stepfather.”

I put down the rake and turned around. “Did he hurt you?”

“He’s never hurt me, Raven. But he is drinking, and it scares me when he gets drunk. It even scares the dog.”

“Do you want to talk?” I asked, heading into the cemetery to meet her.

She nodded her head. “But not about my stepfather. I wanted to talk to you about –” She looked down at the tombstone of Thomas Muffet. “About this.”

“Oh,” I said, not wanting to talk about that at all. “Candy, it’s getting dark. Maybe we should go into the house and talk.”

“No,” she said, still staring at the grave. “Raven, when I came to see you, something drew me to this graveyard. I was thinking about what you said happened under the bleachers in gym class. Do you think . . . was I really . . . Little Miss Muffet?”

“You saw the makeup on your face, and I’m sure you found the cigarette lighter in your sock. So, you tell me.”

“It’s weird, but I don’t remember doing those things.”

“What about your braces?” I asked.

“Oh, that was me,” she said, waving her hand through the air. “My time was up in a few days, so I told the orthodontist I didn’t like wearing braces anymore. He said my teeth were fine so he took them off for me a little early.”

“I’m afraid Patience Muffet is invading your being,” I told her. “I know when it happened to me, I could hear Mary’s thoughts in my head. Have you . . . heard any of her thoughts?”

“I think I have,” said Candy. “Tell me what you know about her.
